Pre-Operational Assimilation Testing of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS)

چکیده
On October 18, 2003, the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) successfully launched DMSP F16 satellite with the first Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMI/S) instrument aboard. The SSMI/S is a conically-scanning passive microwave radiometer that includes seven temperature-sounding channels peaking below 30 km (channels 1-7), and six peaking between 30 km and 80 km (channels 19-24) (Fig. 1).

متن کاملForeword to the Special Issue on the DMSP SSMIS
THE JOINT Air Force and Navy Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) has a rich heritage of flying new state-of-the art remote sensing instruments to provide timely and critical global weather intelligence to the military users and stable global radiometric observations to the earth science community. In particular, DMSP has had a string of successes flying passive microwave sensors wit...
متن کاملEvaluating Consistency of Snow Water Equivalent Retrievals from Passive Microwave Sensors over the North Central U. S.: SSM/I vs. SSMIS and AMSR-E vs. AMSR2
For four decades, satellite-based passive microwave sensors have provided valuable snow water equivalent (SWE) monitoring at a global scale. Before continuous long-term SWE records can be used for scientific or applied purposes, consistency of SWE measurements among different sensors is required. SWE retrievals from two passive sensors currently operating, the Special Sensor Microwave Imager So...
متن کاملOptimal Antenna Coatings for High Frequency Microwave Radiometers: DMSP SSMIS Case Study
The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) has flown three Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounders (SSMIS), first conceived in early 1989, and first flown in October of 2003. Many technical challenges have been overcome during the design, build, and test phases of the program, and many challenges have presented themselves during the calibration and validation phases of the program for...
متن کاملAn Updated Geophysical Model for AMSR-E and SSMIS Brightness Temperature Simulations over Oceans
In this study, we considered the geophysical model for microwave brightness temperature (BT) simulation for the Atmosphere-Ocean System under non-precipitating conditions. The model is presented as a combination of atmospheric absorption and ocean emission models. We validated this model for two satellite instruments—for Advanced Microwave Sounding Radiometer-Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) onb...
